Wilo portfolio overview: what engineers and contractors need to know after the September webinar.
On September 23, Merion Pump Company hosted a live webinar with Carl Pappalardo from Wilo covering the full Wilo pump portfolio. The session ran about an hour and covered everything from three-speed wet rotor circulators through split case pumps up to 20,500 GPM, ECM motor technology and the DOE efficiency requirements coming in 2028, booster pump systems, water management products, and Wilo’s custom packaged skid capability. If you registered but could not attend, or if you attended and want to revisit a specific section, the full recording is available.

This article summarizes the key points from the presentation for engineers and contractors working on commercial and institutional pump system projects in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware.
The Wilo company structure
Carl opened by clarifying something that confuses a lot of people in the market: Wilo USA is not just one pump manufacturer. It is five companies operating under one roof at the Cedarburg, Wisconsin headquarters, just north of Milwaukee.
The Wilo brand covers the wet rotor circulators, ECM smart pumps, vertical inline pumps, and end suction pumps that are the core of the commercial HVAC product line. WILE handles ejector pumps and booster pumps on the plumbing side. Scott Pump, acquired from the marine industry, covers closed-coupled pumps, stainless steel pumps, and the MVI multistage line that is one of the strongest products in the Wilo portfolio. American Marsh, based in Tennessee, covers vertical turbine pumps, vertical inline pumps, and split case pumps including fire pump applications. Quantumflow, based in Florida, adds booster pump models ranging from small wall-hung units to large commercial and industrial configurations.
The Cedarburg facility is 240,000 square feet with an 8,500-gallon test pit and a 508A certified panel shop in-house. That panel shop is a genuine differentiator: it gives Wilo the ability to build custom electrical panels with redundant transducers, electrical bypass, and separate power feeds per pump for mission-critical booster applications without going to a third-party panel manufacturer.
Wet rotor circulators and ECM technology
Carl spent significant time on the wet rotor circulator line because it is the product category most engineers and contractors encounter first, and because the DOE 2028 efficiency requirements are going to change what is available in the market.
The current three-speed and single-speed circulators will need to transition to ECM motor technology by 2028 per DOE requirements. Wilo is prepared for this. The E21Z and E33Z ECM replacements for the current NSF 61 certified circulators are in development, and the Velo Pico, a European product with a universal four-connection flange design that matches up with existing pumps for direct replacement, is coming to the US market.
For engineers who want to understand why wet rotor matters: in a wet rotor design, the motor is cooled by the fluid being pumped rather than by external airflow or fins. The thrust plate between the volute and the motor acts as a heat exchanger. No mechanical seal, no external motor bearings exposed to the environment, significantly reduced maintenance requirements compared to a traditional pump and motor assembly.
The Stratos MAXO line
The Stratos MAXO is the ECM smart circulator that Merion Pump has been talking about since we introduced the Wilo line. Single pump: 280 GPM, 52 feet of head. Dual pump configuration, the Stratos MAXO-D, runs two pumps on a single volute configurable for parallel operation to double flow or lead-lag for N plus 1 redundancy in a single riser connection. The MAXO-Z is the NSF 61 certified potable water version, 240 GPM, 40 feet of head.
All MAXO configurations use the same green button interface with a 4.3 inch LED display. BACnet MSTP, BACnet IP, Modbus, LAN, and other CIF modules install with two Phillips head screws behind the display screen. The Wilo Assistant app provides Bluetooth access to pump settings and real-time operating data without a ladder when the pump is installed in a high location.
Two control features worth understanding for engineering specifications. Dynamic Adapt Plus is the default operating mode out of the box: the pump measures the relationship between pressure and volume in the system over several days and automatically adjusts to the most efficient duty point for the actual system conditions, continuing to adjust for seasonal load changes. Multi-flow adaptation coordinates multiple Wilo pumps through the WiloNet communications cable, allowing a primary boiler or chiller pump to automatically adjust its output based on the sum of secondary loop demands.
Vertical inline and large pumps
The Stratos GIGA 2.0 is the ECM vertical inline pump Carl was most enthusiastic about. 550 GPM, 167 feet of head, IE5 premium motor, same controller interface as the MAXO. Differential pressure and temperature control built in. Carl positioned it directly against the Grundfos TPE3, useful context for engineers who already have the TPE3 on their basis of design.
For larger applications, the IL and IPL vertical inline pumps go to 1,450 GPM and 440 feet of head. The IL HE variant in development for 2027 will include a VFD pre-wired and mounted to the motor as a standard offering. The split case pumps cover the largest flow applications: the Wilo SCP to 5,000 GPM, the Atmos Terra SCH to 20,500 GPM with NSF certification and an adjustable motor bracket base that simplifies laser alignment in the field.
Packaged skid systems
Carl spent the final portion of the presentation on Wilo’s custom packaged skid capability. The Hope Gardens project in New York City was the anchor example: 22 custom enclosed outdoor mechanical packages built to replace basement mechanical rooms damaged by Hurricane Sandy and relocated to rooftops and building-adjacent locations. Linden Plaza was a second example: a system over 50 feet long with six boilers, domestic hot water equipment, and expansion tanks, designed to split in two sections for shipping and field assembly, with a removable exterior panel for service access to pumps installed against the enclosure wall due to space constraints.
Wilo provides BIM-ready Revit models at LOD 300 for packaged systems. Carl also mentioned a current project in production with Merion Pump: three Plaid vertical inline pumps on a skid with welded manifolds, grooved connection points, and a custom VFD panel for a secondary pump system.
Next steps
Carl and Matt both offered to come in to engineering firms, contractor offices, and facility teams for a deeper conversation about specific projects. Carl visits the Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware region regularly. Factory tours to Cedarburg are available.
